New England Fall Foliage Trip Day Nine: We’re in Lobster Land Now!

Fresh fall air wafted through our open motel window this morning and the sun rose above the low-lying clouds on the mountainside. What an invigorating new morning!

After packing our bags, we made our way to the local coffee shop and bookstore (White Mountain Cafe & Bookstore) – our favorite way to start the day.

It’s just impossible to capture the full breadth of an area, but the combination of blue sky and fog and patchwork clouds was incredible!

A few miles after commencing our day’s journey we crossed into Maine. The fall colors were still lovely, but the towns weren’t quite as intriguing, so we didn’t do much stopping before we arrived at our next destination: Bar Harbor, Maine

We had three hours before check-in, so we parked our car at the motel and walked into the village to investigate the surroundings.

Of course this included scoping out our ice cream and pastry options and perusing through the local bookshop. They even had a tea shop!

Numerous sailboats dotted the harbor, and clear skies and sparkling water made for a picturesque setting.

Time passed quickly, and the check-in window was upon us, so we walked back to Bar Harbor Motel to unload our luggage and do some research to find a dinner place.

Two hours later we were ready to go. [Have you ever tried searching for an open, well-rated, reasonably priced restaurant in Bar Harbor that offers gluten-free menu options?!] It couldn’t have worked out more perfectly. We drove to the west side of the island to a pizza take-out restaurant called West Eden Pizza. Our pizza was hot and ready to go, thanks to the online ordering available via their website.

Since there was no dining area, we drove a little further up the road to see if we could find a place to sit and watch the sunset. We scored an amazing location right along the water where a brilliant array of colors flooded the sky as the sun ducked below the horizon.

From a fallen log on the shore we sat, mesmerized, savoring each bite of pizza while we watched the light gradually give way to the night sky. Goodnight, Maine.

We went to Bar Harbor on our honeymoon some 19 years ago and said from the start we wanted to come back there some day. We’ve yet to make it again but it’s a great place!

Aww, that’s so cool! It was such a charming ocean-side town. If you’re anything like us, the challenge is that there are so many new places we still want to go that we’ll probably never get around to going back to the favorite places we’ve already been!
